Earlier this month, Uganda announced a proposed new law that would allow for homosexuals to be sentenced to death for being gay and their families and friends to be jailed for up to seven years if they did not report them to the authorities.

While we were still recovering from this shock, our media saw pictures of Mohamed Abukar Ibrahim being buried before being stoned to death after his being convicted of adultery.

We condemn both instances as barbaric and backwards. Others will invoke the name of their gods or other cultural doctrines in defence of these savage acts, but we dare say that there could be tolerance in this era of enlightenment and where human life is sacred.
