FORMER health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, pictured , has died.

She died just after 2pm yesterday at the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre from complications related to her first liver transplant performed in 2007.

Her doctor, Professor Jeff Wing, said: "She had been in a critical condition in the ICU since last Friday. She had been in a critical but stable condition since her admission to hospital earlier this month. She took a turn for the worst four days ago and had to be transferred to the ICU. At the time of her death, we were still in the process of trying to find her a match for a liver transplant."

Dubbed "Dr Beetroot" by her critics, her tenure as health minister was marred by her promotion of garlic, olive oil, beetroot and lemon as remedies for HIV-Aids.

After former president Thabo Mbeki was recalled by the ANC last year Tshabalala-Msimang was removed from her post by Mbeki's successor, Kgalema Motlanthe, and made a minister in the presidency.
