THE MANGOSUTHU University of Technology has cut the salary of its suspended vice chancellor, Aaron Ndlovu by half.

Ndlovu who is believed to be the highest paid vice chancellor in South Africa, was receiving a whopping R3,7million a year.

But the university, at a media conference held on campus yesterday, said that it had now drastically cut Ndlovu's salary.

The university's council chairperson Jerome Ngwenya said they arrived at the figure based on the Department of Education's guidelines.

"His salary has been cut from R3,7million to R1,6million per annum," he said.

He said Ndlovu had been on fully paid suspension since the university launched investigations into fraud, corruption and poor governance.

While the disciplinary hearings are under way, Ndlovu will now be living on what can be described as the "lowest income" he has received in years.

The university is in the process of appointing a new vice chancellor to lead the university from next year.

Ndlovu is expected to continue earning his salary until the end of this month when his contract expires.

But he will not escape the outcome of the internal hearing currently under way into charges of fraud, corruption and poor governance.

Ndlovu was suspended last year.

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport, community safety and liaison Willies Mchunu has been appointed the new chancellor of the university.
