UNIVERSITY of Johannesburg continued their monopoly of University Sport South Africa (Ussa's) women's soccer by winning the 2009 club championship.
The students from Johannesburg achieved this feat after a 1-0 win over favourites University of Pretoria in Mafikeng on Saturday.
Nthabeleng Modiko scored the only goal of the match against Tukkies, who feature Banyana Banyana player Simphiwe Dludlu.
The hard-working Modiko crowned an impressive week by walking away with the Player of the Tournament award.
"We have a solid team that has been playing together for some time. We could not have asked for a better Christmas present," said Modiko.
Tukkies shot-stopper Lerato Mamabolo deservedly won the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award.
In the men's section, University of North West's Mafikeng campus won gold after beating University of Venda 5-4 on penalties.
Jerry Laka, the former Ussa soccer committee chairperson, said: "It was a great tournament, we were using it to select a team for Cucsa (Southern Africa universities' tournament) in Botswana in July.
"The selected team will be announced later this week. We are confident the team will make us proud in Gaborone."
Malumbete Ralethe, Federation of International Universities Sports (Fisa) executive member said preparations in Botswana were going well.
