The family of a 15-year old girl who was raped, stabbed seven times and stoned before having a boulder placed on her chest broke down yesterday when they recalled her death.

The incident, which occurred last Sunday at Mahlongwa on the South Coast, has been widely condemned.

Grade 4 learner Nolwazi Phohlwane's alleged killer is known to the family and was a friend of one of her four brothers.

Yesterday a heart-broken Makhosi Mnyandu (sister-in-law) told how the two, accompanied by an older sister, had out in search of jobs as domestic workers.

"We were approached by the suspect, whom we know, and he directed me to one home. He said he would personally take Nolwazi to another."

She said she got suspicious when she was turned away from the home and saw the man without Nolwazi.

"I asked him where Nolwazi was and he said she had been picked up by a BMW."

She said police arrived on the scene after her sister had been found and she was taken to hospital by helicopter but it was too late and she died after a few hours.

The suspect will appear in the Scottburgh magistrate's court today on charges of rape, assault and murder.

Provincial social development MEC Meshack Radebe and Police commissioner Mamonye Ngobeni visited the family.
