A puddle of water for R20500

A SURFBOARD made entirely of ice was auctioned in Cape Town on Wednesday night for a whopping R20500.

But by the end of yesterday it had melted, leaving its new owners with only a puddle of water to show for their money.

The ice-board auction was held as part of an event aiming to raise R100000 for ocean charities such as the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and Shark Spotters.

Both the NSRI and Shark Spotters are in big demand in Cape Town during the summer - with the NSRI rescuing many swimmers and fishermen who get into difficulty in the sea.

With great white sharks often approaching Cape Town's Muizenberg beach, the Shark Spotters watch the ocean from the nearby mountain and warn swimmers in time for them to get out of the water.
