Road company defends extra payment of R3m

A JOHANNESBURG company that was allegedly paid more than R3million extra by the suspended Nkomazi municipal manager says the increment was worth it.

A JOHANNESBURG company that was allegedly paid more than R3million extra by the suspended Nkomazi municipal manager says the increment was worth it.

Sabelo Shabangu, the municipal manager of Nkomazi municipality, is accused of paying Tarfix R3,2million extra without following procedures, an allegation he denies. But Tarfix, which was awarded a tender for upgrading roads - providing surfaced bus routes to seven communities in the area - says the money was needed.

The original tender amount was R41990000 but later rose to R45145000. Tarfix chief executive Kevin MacKinnon yesterday told Sowetan that additional funds were required for certain roads due to the poor quality of material, and the need to import additional materials, as well as the provision of extra drainage.

"A formal application for this funding, together with the accompanying motivation, was compiled by the municipality using information provided by the contractor as well as the municipality and was presented in an application for additional funding by the municipality," MacKinnon said.

"The additional funding was not available in full, and it was therefore agreed that a combination of some funds, coupled with the shortening of the project from 32,2km to 26,8km, would solve the problem.

"The statement that Tarfix was overpaid is very damaging to this company," MacKinnon said. - S owetan Reporter
