Former mayor charged with murder suspended from her post

FORMER eNdumeni municipality mayor Thandeka Nukani has been suspended after missing her third consecutive council meeting on Monday.

Nukani is an ANC Ward 4 councillor and the party's exco member in the Bhambatha region. She is also facing an attempted murder charge.

Nukani, 42, has been in custody since October and subsequently missed three council meetings, including the one held on Monday.

She is set to lose the R18 000 salary she pockets as a full-time councillor.

Nukani was denied bail yesterday in the Utrecht magistrate's court. She has been remanded until 15 December.

Mayor Bongiwe Mbatha yesterday confirmed Nukani's supension.

Nukani and her two co-accused, boyfriend Bongani Shangase and driver Peter Khumalo are charged with conspiracy to commit murder after they allegedly bribed a Waterval Prison inmate to poison Nukani's nephew, Siyabonga Nukani, after he turned state witness.

It is believed the three paid the inmate R2 500, half of what he demanded to "silence" Nukani.
