Another tragedy at Nandoni Dam

NANDONI Dam outside Thohoyandou has landed in the spotlight again after another fisherman is believed to have drowned in its waters this week.

Tahulela Nembudani, 33, was reported missing when he did not return home to Ha-Dumasi after a fishing trip.

His body was found in the dam on Tuesday afternoon.

It is alleged that Nembudani was seen by other fishermen on Sunday. He is believed to have been wading in the water with a net, though witnesses say they did not notice anything amiss.

Nembudani's death brings the number of lives lost at the dam to more than 10 over the past four years.

Locals searched for Nembudani without success until his body was finally spotted. Police confirmed that drowning was suspected.

Police spokesperson Captain Mashudu Malelo said an inquest docket had been opened.

Malelo further appealed to fishermen to use the recommended fishing boats.

"We appeal to fishermen and those who want to swim in the dam to stay away if they are not able to swim or if they do not have safety equipment."

He warned that the police would take action against those found fishing without the correct equipment.

Fishing at Nandoni Dam continues to be a source of income and food for hundreds of families living near it.
