Most visible among them was Sergeant Mphai Gwebu, who commandeered a 15-member platoon in discharging heavy artillery during a mock combat.
The scene represented a rare sight but one all ought to be proud of as this special group of women have shown grit in proving they are as equal to highly specialised military tasks as their male counterparts.
It is encouraging that the army has not paid lip service to the ideal of women empowerment but has the likes of Gwebu to prove its commitment to equity.
The changing face of the South African army can only augur well for its future and inspire young women to choose a military career.
