PLAYWRIGHT, actor, director, composer, singer, and producer Mbongeni Ngema yesterday launched his latest production, Lion of the East, at the Playhouse Drama Theatre in Durban.

Ngema, pictured, has made his mark in this country and internationally by producing work that is a true reflection of South Africa.

The play was commissioned by Mpumalanga government to commemorate the life of ANC struggle icon Gert Sibande.

Sibande was one of the eminent political activists in Bethal and was the leader of the farmworkers in what was then known as the Eastern Transvaal (now Mpumalanga).

He was also one of the first of a string of accused in the 1956 to 1961 treason trial.

At the time, he was an ANC national executive committee member.

The production, which includes an assortment of music, dance and drama, will run from December 15 to early January.
