THE DA in the eThekwini municipality has taken issue with the executive council over its approval of a more than R14million housing project to eradicate informal settlements in and around Durban.
The council agreed to invest money in the construction of 140 units at Lotus Park in Isipingo, south of Durban.
Last week the municipality sealed a deal with a black economic empowerment enterprise known as Southway Freight, which runs a number of social investment initiatives in the area, to allocate 70 houses for its staff.
The company donated R500000 towards the construction of the houses as part of a public-private initiative to change the lives of the poor.
The Silvergull Drive Housing project will be built on 2,37ha of vacant land.
DA leader Duncan du Bois said: "The council is flouting the relevant process by reaching an agreement with a private company to allocate houses for its staff.
It is setting an unacceptable precedent," Du Bois said.
He said the council was making a "mockery" of Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale's pledge to root out impropriety in the allocation of housing.
