Allenby takes Nedbank Golf Challenge

FOR Australian Robert Allenby he must be counting his blessings for winning the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

He turned his back on the Aussie Open to rock up in SA as he pocketed a $1.2million (R9.6million) in a sudden-death playoff with Swede Henrik Stenson at the Gary Player Country Club yesterday.

Coming in to the final round two shots behind overnight leader and two-time US Open champion Retief Goosen, Allenby fired a final round 71 to set up a showdown with last year's winner Stenson.

Holding his nerve he won the tournament at the third extra hole to become the first Australian to win the prestigious trophy.

Allenby then played possibly the shot of the tournament and placed his ball two metres away from the pin.

A simple putt saw him pocketing the winners cheque and raising the crystal trophy.

For local boy Tim Clark is was too little too late as he fired an impressive final round 69 to finish in tied third position with England's Ross Fisher.
