STAUNCH Africanist Andrew Ratsila is no more.

"Spirit", as he was known to comrades and friends, of Mohlakeng near Randfontein, was sentenced to five years imprisonment for "Furthering the aims of a banned organisation" - the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania - in 1963.

He served his sentence on Robben Island, and in Stoffberg and Victor Verster.

Spirit was released in 1968, but in his soft-spoken way, quietly went about the work of the PAC. He was also a member of the Apla Military Veterans Association.

Service at his 21 Harmse Kotze Street, Eke Park in Randfontein, will be held at 6am today. The funeral service will be held at Mohlakeng Anglican Church tomorrow from 7am and the cortege will leave for the local cemetery at 10am.
