A RING of steel has been thrown around Cape Town ahead of the 2010 Fifa World Cup final draw at the International Convention Centre tonight.

More than 3500 police officers, SA National Defence Force members and City of Cape Town metro trafficofficers will be on duty.

Members of the South African Air Force will monitor the proceedings from the sky to ensure the safety of about 2000 dignitaries.

Only people accredited for the final draw will be allowed into the centre.

President Jacob Zuma and a throng of government officials will be there, while celebrities such as Charlize Theron, Franz Beckenbauer, Michel Platini, Roger Milla, Eusebio, Makhaya Ntini, John Smit, Haile Gebresellasie and Johnny Clegg will also grace the ceremony.

A message from former president Nelson Mandela, who played a key role in South Africa's bid campaign, will be screened.

Security is tight even in the streets of Cape Town to ensure muggers and bag snatchers stay away from the precinct. Hotels and restaurants have employed private security guards to protect guests.

Fifa local organising committee CEO Danny Jordaan said South Africa's hosting of major global sporting events had always been a roaring success in terms of security, including the 1995 Rugby World Cup and 2009 Confederations Cup.

LOC chairperson Irvin Khoza described today's draw as a historic event that should make all South Africans and Africans proud.
