Limpopo fight fest is on the cards

TAKING boxing to the people is the SABC's policy, so nothing will stop the national broadcaster from trekking to Limpopo.

TAKING boxing to the people is the SABC's policy, so nothing will stop the national broadcaster from trekking to Limpopo.

This assurance was made yesterday by Joe Visagie, head of SABC Sport's programming and scheduling, in reaction to a Sowetan story titled "Baloyi's fans want home bout", with the sub-heading "Limpopo left out of the picture".

Fans have appealed to both the national broadcaster and promoter Branco Milenkovic to afford fighters from that province an opportunity to fight at home.

They have asked the powers that be to bring Cassius Baloyi, Isaac Hlatshwayo and other fighters back home, and promised to fill any hall to the rafters.

"Nothing will stop us from going to Limpopo," Visagie said.

Limpopo stars Baloyi, Hlatshwayo, Phillip Ndou, Jeffrey Mathebula, Klaas Mboyane, Oscar Chauke and Muvhuso Nedzanani are all in Milenkovic's stable.

"It will be my pleasure to stage a boxing extravaganza featuring most of them in front of their home fans," said Milenkovic, who works exclusively with the SABC. "I have no doubt people will support me but ticket sales will not be enough to cover even half the expenses.

"This is based on the logistics of my IBF junior lightweight title fight between Cassius and Malcolm Klassen in Mafikeng, which is the same distance as Polokwane. However, I am in talks with SABC Sport to take one boxing extravaganza to Limpopo in the new year."
