'Help state fight scourge of child pornography'

THE department of Home Affairs has called on Eastern Cape traditional leaders to play a role in the fight against child pornography.

THE department of Home Affairs has called on Eastern Cape traditional leaders to play a role in the fight against child pornography.

Speaking at a meeting organised by the Film and Publications Board in East London yesterday, Deputy Minister Malusi Gigaba said: "I call on you to encourage your subjects to do everything possible to protect children in this province against this scourge."

The meeting was to solicit the support of traditional leadership in the fight against child pornography.

Gigaba told traditional leaders that the media had not played a very helpful role in the protection of children against pornography.

Gigaba and the traditional leaders agreed that the best solution would be to totally ban pornography in the media so that it is not easily accessible to children.

"We are engaging the South African Law Reform Commission to advise with a view to advocating for an enactment of the provision in the relevant act that will provide for this complete ban," he said

Inkosi Ngangomhlaba Matanzima said traditional leaders will work with the government to end child pornography.
