The new award is aimed at players under the age of 19 at the quadrennial soccer fiesta.
Sono attended the launch of the new award at the International Convention Centre in Cape Town, where he also delivered a keynote address in the presence of Fifa secretary-general Jerome Valcke.
"It's a great honour and privilege to serve as an ambassador. It makes me very excited because I was once a young player myself. I have worked with young players in Africa, they are close to my heart," Sono said.
"If you build a house, you need to start with a solid foundation. The same applies to soccer, to run a successful club you need to have a good foundation in the form of a development structure.
"We know of many players like Pele who received similar awards at a very young age and went on to become some of the most successful players in the world.
"This new award will encourage players to give their best shot.
"I want to thank Hyundai for their continued involvement in the development of soccer globally," said Sono, who also praised Fifa's Sepp Blatter and Jerome Valcke for their continued confidence in South Africa to deliver a great 2010 World Cup.
