No shortage of beds for 2010

MORE than 500000 soccer fans visiting South Africa for the World Cup need not worry about accommodation and transport, Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke announced in Cape Town yesterday.

MORE than 500000 soccer fans visiting South Africa for the World Cup need not worry about accommodation and transport, Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke announced in Cape Town yesterday.

"We are fine now, there are enough hotel rooms and beds to accommodate all the people coming for the World Cup next year," said Valcke at a media briefing at the International Convention Centre yesterday.

"From December 4 we will launch a new site of Fifa.com for people to look for accommodation for the Cup. We are happy that accommodation is no longer an issue.

"Transport is also not an issue anymore. We will also be renting aircraft for the World Cup. The aim is to help all the African countries to fly directly to South Africa for the tournament.

"As Fifa we want to facilitate all the movements of people of Africa in the countries that have qualified for the tournament."

The other African teams are Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Algeria, Ghana and Nigeria.

Valcke said Fifa would also open more ticketing centres.

"We will be launching a new TV campaign around the issue of tickets, we need people to buy tickets. We are working hard to ensure that more South Africans and the rest of Africa access the tickets."

Local Organising Committee chairperson Irvin Khoza and chief executive Danny Jordaan have also appealed to South Africans to buy tickets for the World Cup to show that locals have a passion for the beautiful game.

The third phase of ticket sales will start on Saturday. Confederation of African Football president Issa Hayatou has also supported the call for Africans to buy tickets.
