Molewa adopts concept to boost poor

SOCIAL Development Minister Edna Molewa has pronounced that the One Stop Development Centre concept was a national programme.

The concept was initiated by the KwaZulu-Natal department of social development in 2008.

It is a project that provides a full range of social development services to children, women, elderly people, youth, people with disabilities as well as families infected and affected by the scourge of HIV and Aids.

Making a pronouncement during a ministers and MECs meeting in Ngome at Umsinga, KwaZulu-Natal, Molewa said this concept had proved to be a success and urged MECs to implement it.

"Tu Song Centres are more information dissemination centres, whereas One Stop Development Centres provide holistic, comprehensive and accessible range of social developmental services to marginalised communities to improve their quality of life," she said.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for social development Meshack Hadebe said he was proud.

"Though I have been the MEC for this department for three years, I am proud that my concept has been adopted by other provinces," he said.

"This concept has already had an impact in addressing the plight of the poor, particularly in deep rural areas because clients are afforded an opportunity to obtain a full range of services from one centre, without having to travel to another area to receive other services."

Apart from a number of One Stop Development Centres, which are in the construction phase, the department has the fully fledged and functional One Stop Development Centres in areas such as Tulwane-eNkandla, Mamba-eNkandla, eMboza, eNgome, eSinkonkonko in KwaNongoma and eNanda.

In these centres the Social Development Department is partnering with the departments of Health, SAPS, Home Affairs, SASSA and NGOs.
