Cop nabbed in arrests over murder of ex-official

THREE people - including a policeman - were arrested on Saturday for the recent murder of a former KwaZulu-Natal government official, Antony Dorning.

Another suspect, Sphamandla Madlala, was killed when he reportedly tried to escape arrest by shooting at the arresting officers.

Director Phindile Radebe said the policeman, who holds the rank of an inspector, was found with goods stolen from Dorning's home.

"Crack detectives from Pietermaritzburg's serious crime unit swooped on the suspects in Thokozani township near Crammond.

"Two suspects were armed with 9mm pistols and a revolver. A third, a police inspector stationed at Howick SAPS, was found in possession of a cellphone and a DVD player belonging to Dorning."

Radebe said the three were expected to appear in the Howick magistrate's court today.

She said provincial commissioner Mamonye Ngobeni had commended the police action.

"The commissioner has also assured the residents of KwaZulu-Natal that they will have a peaceful sleep during the festive season as police will crack down on crime and criminal elements."

Dorning, 55, was killed when three armed men confronted him and his wife on their farm near Howick earlier this month.

A farmer and a doctor by profession, Dorning was the chief of staff in KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize's office and retired in July.
