MORE children under 18 have been murdered and raped in Limpopo this year compared with last year.

MORE children under 18 have been murdered and raped in Limpopo this year compared with last year.

The DA was commenting on provincial SAPS statistics at the unveiling of the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Abuse of Women and Children, which coincides with the United Nation's International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women.

According to the statistics, the murder rate of children under 18 increased by 21,62percent from 37 reported cases in 2007-08 to 45 reported cases in 2008-09. The report says the conviction rate for 2007/8 was a mere 29 cases and 34 cases in 2008-09.

The report further says that 1 759 cases of sexual offences against children under 18 were reported in 2007-08 and 1663 cases in 2008-09.

It further paints a bleak picture of a low conviction rate of about 11percent for both years.

The murder rate of women older than 18 years has increased by 14,75percent. This was also compounded by low conviction rates of 14,48percent and 15,12percent. The decrease in the category of sexual offences against women older than 18 years was overshadowed by the low conviction rates.

DA leader in Limpopo Desiree van der Walt said the party's vision of an open opportunity society for all regards personal safety as a prerequisite for a healthy society. She said although abuse normally occurs in the home, training more police officers would improve the ability to fight and respond to crime before it occurs.

"We believe the 16 Day campaign should be extended to 365 days."
