Motlanthe to be honoured in Meadowlands township

MEADOWLANDS township in Soweto is gearing up for a top notch ball to honour one of its illustrious sons, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

MEADOWLANDS township in Soweto is gearing up for a top notch ball to honour one of its illustrious sons, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

The Meadowlands Foundation, an offshoot of the June 16 Foundation and the Umkhonto Veterans Association, will hold a day-long art, crafts and cultural exhibition in Meadowlands on December 16 at the local stadium in Zone 5.

Top music groups will provide entertainment during the event, which will culminate in a gala dinner in the evening.

"We originally wanted to highlight the role played by the Meadowlands High School in the June 16 struggle for democracy.

"The Deputy President was a scholar there. But Motlanthe does not only belong to Meadowlands, so we decided on a wider celebration to honour all our heroes," said chief executive officer Jackie Peeha.

He said the foundation will be used to kick-start SME development and create a sustainable financial model for the township. Residents will be encouraged to set up cooperatives with community-based organisations, the government and private business.

The cooperatives will ensure money remains in Meadowlands and there are plans to launch a community bank.

"We want to create a vibrant SME sector and another tier of funding.

"Cooperatives are a sure vehicle for broad-based participation in the economy and skills transfer," said Peeha.
