THE Independent Complaints Directorate is investigating the murder of a 30-year-old man who was shot by the police at Moletji, outside Polokwane in Limpopo, on Wednesday.

The dead man was identified as Philemon Moloto of GaChokoe village in Moletji.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said Moloto was wanted in connection with several housebreaking cases.

He said after receiving a tip-off on Moloto's whereabouts the police followed him to Makgodu village, where they spotted him, but he fled.

Police gave chase and Moloto ran into a house, where he allegedly hacked a man with a panga on the forehead.

The man, who owns the house, has been admitted to Polokwane Hospital with serious head injuries.

Realising that he was cornered Ramatseba said Moloto attacked a constable with the panga but was shot. He was certified dead by paramedics on the scene.

ICD spokesperson Moses Dlamini said yesterday that they were investigating the matter.

"We are investigating Moloto's death, who was allegedly shot by the police," Dlamini said.

"As police watchdog we will leave no stone unturned.

"At this stage we cannot say what course of action is going to be taken against the police officer(s) responsible for Moloto's death.

"We hope our investigations will yield positive results," he said.

Ramatseba said a case of murder had been opened against a police officer and was being investigated before the docket could be forwarded to the director of public prosecutions for adecision.
