THE office of the Eastern Cape police commissioner is investigating allegations of fraud and corruption against the Cedarville police station.
Police Commissioner Mpumelelo Landu has confirmed that there is an intensive investigation, which is being conducted by his office against the police station.
"Our intentions are to deal with the corrupt police and ensure that they are removed from their positions if found guilty," Landu said.
He said this following after a delegation from his office that visited the police station last in the past week. The delegation was reportedly tasked with investigating allegations of negligence, favouritism, fraud and corruption against some police officers at the station.
Cedarville police station came under fire after allegations that its station commander, Jolisile Dlangamandla, deliberately disrupted the investigation of certain cases - especially those involving his close friends.
Dlangamandla was accused of delaying the arrest of local farmer Samuel van Zyl, 38, who was accused of brutally assaulting a 21-year old man by tying his genitals and dragging him to a vehicle for 2km.
The man survived but lost his teeth. Reports revealed that the man was attacked by the farmer for allegedly stealing horse saddles. Though still injured, the man was arrested while the farmer turned himself in to the police and was granted free bail.
This was despite the fact that Van Zyl was facing serious charges of attempted murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and kidnapping.
Another case that drew attention to the police station was that of an alleged rapist who escaped from the holding cells.
The incident happened after reports that the station commander had instructed police on duty not to send the alleged rapist to the holding cells, but rather to the temporary holding cells, from which he escaped.
The matter prompted the ANC in the Alfred Nzo region to write a letter to Landu and Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa, calling for the two to "rid the police station of its bad apples".
Commander Dlangamandla has confirmed that a task team from Bisho arrived at his police station for investigations but found nothing amiss.
