A SUSPECT who allegedly raped and killed a pupil, and then gouged out her eyes, was arrested yesterday at Ntomu near Giyani.
Mboni Chauke, 20, who was a Grade 10 pupil at John Mbendhle High School in Shihosani outside Malamulele, was brutally killed after writing her exam s.
Her battered body was discovered after five days in bushes by community members after an intensive search last Friday.
Police spokesperson Mapidani Chauke said the suspect is aged about 23 years and would appear in the Malamulele magistrate's court soon.
One of the villages, Nkurhi, is situated at the heart of a rural community, which forces pupils to walk long journeys through bushes to education centres because there is no high school nearby.
The pupil's mother, Agnes Chauke, said her daughter was killed because the education department had failed to build a high school in the village. She also said there was no reliable transport to take children to school safely.
Limpopo department of education spokesperson Dou Magala said the department would send officials to investigate whether the village qualified to have a high school .
