Heath says the decision to have blinds in your home is an easy one - the tricky part comes when you need to decide just what type of blinds you're going to choose.
"To help you reach a decision there are various questions you'll need to ask yourself, the most basic being what function you want the blinds to perform - is it privacy you're after, or are they going to perform a purely decorative function in your home, perhaps framing a beautiful view or hiding a blank space above a wall, or maybe protecting furniture and carpets from harsh sunlight? "
Heath says the style and material will depend on their end use. He advices people to use the following guidelines to help them reach a decision:
l If privacy is a major concern for you, then block-out blinds are required and Venetian blinds are your best option. Venetian blinds offer excellent control of privacy, light and airflow, and the ability to tilt the slats gives you perfect control of glare, light and heat.
l Aluminium Venetian blinds are the most cost-effective option and are better suited to humid areas such as bathrooms and kitchens than wood, which is a natural product and may bow or twist with constant exposure to damp environments. Aluminium Venetian blinds are available in a wide range of colours.
l Bamboo Roman and roll-up blinds are a very cost-effective option that offer varying degrees of light control and privacy.
