Under the apartheid government May 31 was a public holiday called Republic Day. It was a day to celebrate South Africa becoming a republic - on May 31 1961 - when it gained independence from the UK.

South Africa also left the Commonwealth of Nations on that day. On the last Republic Day in 1994, South Africa rejoined the Commonwealth of Nations.
