Ray Mali, the newly appointed ASA administrator, said the Johannesburg meeting was to start the process of "fixing the potholes" in athletics.

Mali will be assisted by SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) employees Khaya Majeke and Cliffie Cobers. Mali is hopeful they will get athletics back on track.

The former Cricket South Africa president has convened an ASA special general meeting that will also see the election of an interim board.

This was after the entire ASA board, led by its president Leonard Chuene, was suspended by Sascoc pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing on their handling of the Semenya gender verification tests.

Names bandied around to be part of the interim board include Stanley Itshegetseng, Hendrick Ramaala, Wilfred Daniels, Ruben Ramolefi and Geraldine Pillay, as well as former ASA chief executive Banele Sindani.

South Africa's top athletes have made it clear that they want more say in the running of the sport. They will address the media today to explain their position.

Hezekiel Sepeng said runners like Ramaala, Pillay, Shadrack Hoff, Xolile Yawa and Elana Meyer must lead the new regime of ASA. Hendrick Mokganyetsi was the only representative of the athletes on the suspended ASA board. Mokganyetsi and Chris Britz have since resigned from the board.

All 17 provincial structures of ASA, as well as current and former athletes, will attend tomorrow's meeting.
