Cosmos sliding back to lower division

JOMO Sono was captured on national television crying like a baby when his Jomo Cosmos reclaimed their Absa Premeirship status on May 10.

JOMO Sono was captured on national television crying like a baby when his Jomo Cosmos reclaimed their Absa Premeirship status on May 10.

Those were tears of joy. His few supporters were also happy for Ezenkosi's achievement.

But it appears that Sono will have to shed more tears when the curtain falls on the current campaign on February 28. Or this may be long before the season ends.

Cosmos are in dire straits and it appears that only a miracle will save them from the real possibility of relegation.

Sono, the players and fans should also be relying on divine providence to overcome what threatens to be insurmountable obstacles.

Though it is too early to predict that Ezenkosi will fall, it is highly unlikely that the Premiership returnees will somehow make a dramatic escape from the axe.

This is based on their pathetic first-round display in which they managed only one victory from 15 matches.

The win was over league upstarts Mpumalanga Black Aces at Rand Stadium on August 26.

They beat AmaZayoni 2-1 and that win lulled Cosmos into a false sense of security.

They forgot that they achieved it over a team that was still trying to adapt to the top flight.

Cosmos failed to win against the league powerhouses and they don't look like they will succeed against them in the second round, which they kick off against Platinum Stars at Moruleng Stadium on Saturday.

This is a team they failed to beat in their season-opener at Rand Stadium on August 8. The tie ended in a goalless draw.

The question, which is not only asked by Cosmos' supporters but by many football enthusiasts, is: will Cosmos manage to beat the likes of SuperSport United, Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows in the second round?

Their performance suggests otherwise. They will also have to meet their fellow relegation candidates, who they failed to beat in the first round of the campaign.

But Sono insists that they will survive. It will be suicidal in terms of boosting morale if they start the second round with a defeat.

Against Stars, they meet a team that also started the season somewhat dolefully. But they are not a side to be written off.

Their coach Steve Komphela is a shrewd mentor, who could easily add to Cosmos's woes.

Sono has to hope that the experience of the likes of captain Avril "Chawe" Phali, Bamuza Sono and Thapelo "Chappies" Tshilo will start to work wonders for the Premiership tail-enders in the second round.

Stanley "Bingo" Kgatla, Henrico Botes and Japanese striker Norikazu Murakami are among the players who could prove a handful for the visitors.

Kickoff is at 3.15pm.
