Interpol on Cup duty

INTERPOL secretary-general Ronald Noble has pledged the international police agency's full support to South Africa during the Fifa World Cup.

"South Africa can be proud of its past achievements, particularly in its ability to deliver major events without incidents," Noble said at a high-profile meeting with National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele in Lyon, France, yesterday.

"Interpol has pledged its commitment to assist South Africa with passport control measures by providing on-site officers to run instant checks against Interpol data bases," said Cele's spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Nonkululeko Mbatha.

This would help police authorities identify stolen and lost travel documents and any cross-border criminal activity, Cele's spokesperson said. - Mfundekelwa Mkhulisi
