Two cops arrested forcorruption

A POLICE officer is in custody after allegedly offering a captain R50000 to destroy a case against his girlfriend.

The police officer allegedly handed R16 000 to the captain to squash the case.

His arrest brings to two the number of Mpumalanga cops arrested for corruption this week alone.

In the latest arrest on Wednesday, Constable Solly Ledwaba, 35, stationed at the Ermelo police station, was charged with corruption and was taken to the Hendrina magistrate's court the same day.

He was not asked to plead to the charges and was remanded pending his next court appearance on November 17 for a bail application.

Police spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi, said Ledwaba allegedly convinced a police captain to squash the case against his girlfriend, Velisiwa Sithamkani, 33, who is already in jail.

Sithamkani was arrested a few months ago and has already been found guilty on 18 counts ranging from theft to assault.

"The accused had been using 33 names in the commission of the crimes and is still facing 10 further charges.

"The boyfriend (Ledwaba) is also facing charges of kidnapping, shoplifting and pointing of a firearm," Hlathi said.

He said Ledwaba allegedly committed the crimes with five other people, one of them his girlfriend Sithamkani.

He was granted R500 bail for these cases pending his next appearance on January 26 for trial.
