Sisulu did the right thing

THE Azanian National liberation Army Military Veterans Association (Azanlamva) welcomes the decision by Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Lindiwe Sisulu to cancel the deal to buy the Airbus A400M.

THE Azanian National liberation Army Military Veterans Association (Azanlamva) welcomes the decision by Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Lindiwe Sisulu to cancel the deal to buy the Airbus A400M.

Military veterans from the former liberation forces, such as Azanla, Aapla and MK, have been suffering and continue to suffer for the past 15 years without benefits from the government or corporate world.

We have a situation in which military veterans die from various diseases and being buried as paupers.

They cannot provide for their families and do not have shelter, while there are billions of rands that could have been used to assist them.

Do we really need the Airbuses in this country and if so for what?

We have situation in which the country is not under threat from any other country. The sudden increase in the price of the Airbuses from R17billion to R47billion leaves one with many questions.

Was the tender process followed properly? Is Sipho Thomo and his accomplice going to benefit from the contract?

Did they think of the plight of military veterans when submitted this tender?

My simple answer will be "no", they only thought of their pockets and how they would benefit from the contract.

One feels that Thomo is not alone in this deal. So all those who are involved must be investigated, fired and prosecuted.

You can just imagine, if R17billion were allocated to military veterans in the form of training, how the lot and suffering of military veterans would be alleviated .

A country that forgets its heroes and heroines is doomed.

Vuyisile Wauchope, Azanlamva general secretary, Johannesburg
