Chiefs explain move

KAIZER Chiefs could not share Orlando Stadium in Soweto with their blood rivals Orlando Pirates due to issues relating to branding and marketing.

KAIZER Chiefs could not share Orlando Stadium in Soweto with their blood rivals Orlando Pirates due to issues relating to branding and marketing.

Chiefs dropped a bombshell this week by dumping the rebuilt Soweto venue and choosing Loftus in Tshwane to host their home matches for the remainder of the season.

"The fact that Pirates are also using Orlando Stadium was a concern for us because there are branding and marketing issues to be considered," said Chiefs manager Bobby Motaung.

"I will like to make it clear that we have got no issues with Orlando Pirates. Apart from the issue of the pitch, we could not fully commit ourselves to using the stadium because of these issues."

Asked if they would not have problems sharing Loftus with Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United, Motaung said this will not be an issue "because we registered Loftus as our alternative home ground".

Motaung also admitted that they could have miscalculated when their own stadium in Mogale City would be completed. He said they will be in a better position to shed light on a possible completion date after they have started work on the site.
