SOMETIMES the only way to cope with South Africa is to laugh out loud - says local comedian Harry Sideropoulos.
Many people will remember his refreshing brand of comedy from his days on the Rude Awakening radio show. His jokes eased the pain of having to wake up early in the morning and brave the clogged Johannesburg highways.
Recently he created, produced, and directed the comedy Happy Shabalala, which has been well received.
"It's the first time I have done political satire. I feel that everybody varnishes things and places a rainbow nation sticker on it. In this play I say things that people are too scared to say."
Making people laugh is not his only talent. He has released two jazz albums and in 2003 produced and starred in the musical spectacle Big Band Blast. The show won 5 Naledi Theatre Awards in 2004 - including Best New Musical.
In addition to his musical success, Harry has also enjoyed a major milestone as far as his health goes. Over the past two years he has lost 54kg!
"I love food. I see it as something that nurtures and gives us sustenance. But I have now learnt to eat only healthy food that has been packaged well."
Cooking has also become a welcome pleasure for him.
"I love cooking. It relaxes me. I think cooking is another form of expressing oneself artistically. I love playing with food by mixing different flavours together to make dishes taste better."
Today Harry gets to play with some cottage cheese.
First up is In-Shapes. "It tastes too synthetic. I think it's a little too runny and I'm not enjoying the aftertaste it leaves."
Next he tries the Pick n Pay brand. "This one has quite a nice texture. It could be used as a chip dip, or lathered on to some toast. I would mix this with some fresh herbs, chives and peppadews."
Awakening from this cottage cheese dream he tries Simonsig. "I like the consistency of this one. It could also be used as a chip dip. It's cheesier than the others."
The last to be tried is Gero's plain cottage cheese. "This is too runny. Iit's almost watery. It has quite a sour taste."
Which of these cottage cheeses has most impressed the comedic crooner? "I must say that I have been quite impressed with the new PnP stuff. It really is quite good." - Keitumetse Segoai
