METRORAIL has pumped in more than R100million to upgrade and development its premier rail stations for the 2010 World Cup.
The upgrading includes renovating ticket offices and public toilets and building new toilets for paraplegics.
Other work includes painting, fencing and resurfacing of station platforms. The installation of new railway signage and installation of new station lights and public address systems are also taking place
The main stations receiving facelifts include Reunion, Isiphingo, Rossburgh, Duff's Road and Durban Central.
The total amount being spent on all four stations is about R114 million and they are expected to be ready for use by March next year - well ahead of the World Cup.
Metrorail regional manager Dumi Dube said as part of the "national transport strategy for 2010" the aim was to ensure safe and comfortable transportation for football fans using the Metrorail system.
The Moses Mabhida station - to be situated near Durban's 2010 soccer stadium of the same name - will be built from scratch and is expected to be ready by May next year.
"The improvements to existing stations and the construction of an ultra-modern station near Durban stadium's will also be a legacy we have in place for our commuters beyond 2010," Dube said.
