Bederman revels in top billing

WINNING the IBO Africa lightweight title has borne fruit for recently crowned champion Jason "Badman" Bederman.

WINNING the IBO Africa lightweight title has borne fruit for recently crowned champion Jason "Badman" Bederman.

His fight with battle-scarred warrior Joseph Modise will top the "Christmas Cracker" bill at Emperors Palace on November 30, co-promoted by Africa Ring and Golden Gloves.

Bederman, 20, from Rosettenville in the south of Johannesburg, has been an undercard fighter since he turned professional in 2008.

"It feels great to become the main fighter," he said yesterday. "This is probably the beginning of bigger things for me."

His skills are honed by top trainer Manny Fernandez.

Modise, who seems to enjoy the sight of blood, is under veteran trainer Norman Hlabane. Their eight-rounder is a rematch of a six-rounder in July that was declared a draw.

"There will be no draw this time but a clean knockout," promised Bederman, who has stopped seven of his nine victims and drawn twice.

Modise has five wins, four losses and two draws.

Fernandez described him as "one of the few white boxers who can fight". Bederman stopped Grant Fourie in the 10th round for the IBO All Africa belt in September. Ellis said Fourie, Flo Simba, Joey Stiglingh, Ashley Dlamini and Kyle Smith will feature in undercard fights.

Meanwhile, Funisani Monta, who was hospitalised last Friday after collapsing in the ring, was discharged yesterday.
