LAST week saw the premiere of Ruby, the inspiring portrayal of an extraordinary woman's emotional quest to lose weight.

The series will hit our screens on The Style Network on DStv's Channel 183 tonight at 11pm. Ruby has to lose weight to regain her confidence and triumph over something that has the potential to kill her.

Viewers are invited into the incredible life of Ruby Gettinger, pictured, a 500-pound young woman. Having hit a peak weight of 715pounds in 1995, Ruby's weight has fluctuated dangerously ever since, but events take a drastic turn when her doctor tells her the terrifying news - lose weight or die.

Determined and spurred on by a network of loyal friends, Ruby embarks on an awe-inspiring journey she hopes will turn her life around. Assembling a team of dieticians, personal trainers and psychologists, Ruby undertakes the biggest challenge she's ever faced . and she's taking the world with her. Can she end her cycle of food addiction and, most importantly, take her first tentative steps towards good health and happiness?

Offering viewers a rare opportunity of seeing the world through an obese person's eyes, the series takes you through daily activities like getting dressed. The documentary series also evaluates Ruby's amazing friendships, following the close circle of allies who have followed her trials and tribulations over the years. Proving crucial towards combating her unhealthy eating and inactive lifestyle, as well as helping her to cope with diabetes, Ruby's fiercely loyal loved ones are on hand to help her stay on track. There is no doubt that thousands of other women trapped in the dilemma of obesity will shed a tear, get inspired and motivated enough to do something about their weight.
