CGA fires president Matthews

CENTRAL Gauteng Athletics president Snowy Matthews is the latest casualty of the Caster Semenya debacle.

CENTRAL Gauteng Athletics president Snowy Matthews is the latest casualty of the Caster Semenya debacle.

In a meeting held at the Central Gauteng offices in Germiston on Sunday, Matthews, her deputy Thomas Manoko and Nandi Mokele were dismissed because they "contradicted the mandate given to them, and chose to support Athletics South Africa's former president Leonard Chuene during the Semenya affair".

An interim executive committee will oversee the clubs in the province, while the provincial board will also take its mandate from this structure.

Stanley Itshegetseng, who was appointed deputy chairperson, confirmed yesterday that Matthews, Manoko and Mokele had lost their positions on the CGA and the ASA boards.

Steven Khanyile has been appointed chairperson of the association, while Itshege-tseng is his deputy. Mahmood Moosa is the new secretary, while Lawrence Peu, Pamela Tainton and Fikile Ndlela are additional executive members.

Matthews was unfazed by the suspension, insisting that she did not recognise it.

"They suspended me because I serve on the ASA board, which was suspended by Sascoc. Our suspension is not legitimate because only the council of Central Gauteng Athletics can suspend us," Matthews said yesterday.
