Ajax Cape Town edged home with an injury-time goal to beat Black Aces 2-1 in a topsy-turvy Premier League match that was as changeable as the weather at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank yesterday afternoon.

A game that started in suffocating heat and blinding sunshine ended symbolically for Aces with dark clouds threatening a major thunder storm as Diyo Sibisi took advantage of a glaring defensive error from Shere Lekgothoane to blast the ball into the roof of the net for the last-gasp winner.

Ironically, Ajax had led for much of the game after taking the lead through a close-range 10th minute goal from Thulani Serero, with a gritty Aces seemingly set to salvage a point via Clifford Mulenga's sweetly-timed goal through a maze of defenders in the 84th minute.

It was not to be, however, with a relieved Ajax returning to second position in the log, two points behind defending champions SuperSport United.

Ajax's Premiership success has been the product of a remarkable run of form away from home, with six wins and a draw on the road and not as much as a single defeat.

But it was a close shave for the Cape club, who appeared to be affected by the oppressive heat and were holding on for dear life for long periods in the second half.

The defeat was also a bitter pill to swallow for promoted Aces as they bid to hold on to their position in the Premier division.

Rumours are also abounding about the future of Aces coach Sammy Troughton, with talk that the club's management have already held discussions with other coaches. Kenny Ndlazi is said to be the favourite for the job. - Sapa
