THE council of the Makhuduthamaga municipality in Jane Furse, Limpopo, has recalled mayor Queen Mokhabela after she crashed her mayoral car.
Mokhabela had previously been advised not to drive the mayoral car herself but continued to ignore the advice.
Last week she was involved in an accident while driving from Gauteng.
The mayoral Mercedes-Benz she was driving was badly damaged and repair costs are estimated at R162000 .
A source close to Sowetan said Mokhabela was driving from Johannesburg, where she had gone to write her year-end examinations at the University of the Witwatersrand.
Municipal speaker Maena Bahula said in a radio interview that the council had taken a decision to recall Mokhabela with immediate effect.
She said because of the arrogant manner in which Mokhabela had been operating, the council had also decided to make her pay for the damages to the car.
"Mokhabela defied council policy by driving herself while the municipality had a mayoral driver," Bahula said.
DA councillor Enos Mailula said: "As council we have agreed that Mokhabela must bear the costs of the damages since she had listened to advice."
He said the council had also resolved to demote Mokhabela and that the ANC, as the ruling party, had been tasked to choose Mokhabela's successor.
"We have given the ANC 14 days to come up with the name of the person who will replace Mokhabela and we hope the new mayor will take issues of service delivery forward," he said.
