Cops ready to stop criminals in their tracks

THE National Police Commissioner's office will unveil its festive season plans to deal with crime, particularly robberies, which are rife during this period.

THE National Police Commissioner's office will unveil its festive season plans to deal with crime, particularly robberies, which are rife during this period.

"With the festive season on us we are bound to see more people trying their luck. But we are ready to ensure that our people are not held to ransom by criminals and violent thugs," National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele said.

Cele's spokesperson, Nonkululeko Mbatha, said details of the crime-combating plans would be unveiled in December.

Just this weekend eight robbers were shot dead in Pretoria and Polokwane.

l In another incident a Pretoria man was shot dead while another shot himself in the groin during a house robbery in Pretoria.

l Two weeks ago four men were shot dead and one arrested in a botched cash-in-transit-heist at Kuils River outside Cape Town after a shoot-out with the police. On October 23 two robbers were gunned down by police during a house robbery in Sodwana Bay, KwaZulu-Natal.

In July and August 38 mall robberies were reported in Gauteng.
