Fear and loathing as man found with face mutilated

Community leaders of Gunjaneni in Mtubatuba, northern Zululand, have called on residents to show a united front against crime and criminal activities in their area.

This comes after Mahlokohloko Mkhwanazi, 47, was found dead with his tongue, eyes, and brain missing on Tuesday night.

Local councillor Qhina Mkhwanazi (not related) said the incident happened at the Ekuthuleni area in Gunjaneni.

"Apparently he was drinking in a neighbouring homestead with other people. They left him there still drinking and he was later found dead.

"His skull had been opened with something like a grinder, his eyes had been gouged out, his brain taken out and his tongue cut out," he said.

Mkhwanazi said it was difficult to speculate why the man was murdered.

Local headman Absalom Mkhwanazi (not related) described the incident as "terrible". He said he was still trying to come to terms with who could have committed such a heinous act.

"Until our communities mobilise and root out criminal activities in our area, we are doomed. This area has become a crime haven lately. Stock theft is on the rise and now this," he said.

Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said the police were investigating.

Meanwhile, a 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a herd boy in KwaMsane.

Mdletshe said the girl told the police she was asleep when she felt someone touching her. "When she woke up the boy was lying next to her and she screamed. The boy fled.

"The girl was taken to the clinic where it was confirmed that she had been penetrated," said Mdletshe.
