united respect stars

NOTHING says "championship material" louder than a team that has lost just one match in 13.

NOTHING says "championship material" louder than a team that has lost just one match in 13.

Almost halfway through the season, Absa Premiership champions SuperSport United have achieved this rare feat going into their next match against Platinum Stars tonight at Super Stadium.

While they are obvious favourites against Steve Komphela's team, which has struggled to maintain any kind of form, United's Morgan Gould has cautioned his teammates against a winning team's biggest enemy - complacency.

And so he should; Matsatsantsa a Pitori have lost only to Ajax Cape Town this season, and that was back in August. That is enough to have any team believing they are invincible.

And judging by the variety of contributors to the goal kitty, competition in Gavin Hunt's camp is healthy.

"We know that another player who is working twice as hard as you is sitting on the bench awaiting his chance" said Gould, who with five goals is tied with teammate Daine Klate as top goalscorers.

The Tycoons have already disposed of United's homeboys Mamelodi Sundowns, which earns them healthy respect in Gould's eyes.

"There are players that I personally like, Edward Williams and Mbulelo Mabizela being just two of them," he said.

United might miss influential duo Glen Salmon and Anthony Laffor who will undergo late fitness tests, while Letladi Madubanya is still battling a recurring injury.

Stars team manager Obed Legobate lamented the absence of Oscar Ntwagae, Williams, who could be out for two to three months, Sailor Tshabalala and Tshepo Ramokala. But Dillon Sheppard could make his comeback in Komphela's starting 11.

"We will stand our ground although we know what they are capable of as champions," said Legobate yesterday. "A worrying trend in our team is that we continue to miss chances, but it is something that cannot be cured overnight."

Kickoff is at 7.30pm.
