Residents riot after accident claims five lives

RESIDENTS of Jane Furse in Sekhukhune took to the streets at the weekend demanding the erection of speed humps or robots at the spot where five people were killed by a speeding car.

The accident happened a fortnight ago at a junction between Mohlarekoma and Brooklyne near Nebo.

Police spokesperson Maboke Lediga said the driver of a 4x4 bakkie had lost control of his vehicle and hit the five pedestrians who were walking on a pavement. They were killed instantly.

Twelve other people were also killed on the same spot last year when a minibus taxi they were travelling in overturned.

At the weekend angry residents burnt car tyres and blocked the streets calling for the department of roads and transport to intervene.

Makhuduthamaga municipality manager Morebudi Thamaga said the complaints has been forwarded to the relevant department.
