Woman found guilty of lying to police

A 34-YEAR-OLD woman who reported a false gang rape case to police and claimed that she was forced to cook dead people's heads has been found guilty of defeating the ends of justice.

Sindisiwe Rebecca Buthelezi of Folweni appeared in the Empangeni magistrate's court yesterday.

She was also found guilty under the Commissioner of Oaths Act.

Buthelezi was arrested last Thursday by the Richards Bay organised crime unit.

She had reported to the police that on October 10 she was s kidnapped in Durban by a woman who had promised her a job in Isipingo.

Senior Superintendent Jay Naicker said the woman had told the police that the woman instead proceeded towards Umzinto where she was dropped off with three men in a bakkie.

"She claimed that the men took her, together with two other women already in the bakkie, to an unknown area.

"The women's faces were covered and she could not see where they were going to," he said.

"She further claimed that they were taken to a bush where she was repeatedly raped by five men and forced to cook the heads of human beings."

Buthelezi said she managed to escape the next day and was given a lift to the Empangeni police station, after which she was taken to hospital.

A case of kidnapping and rape was opened and the police started investigating the matter.

"Police made a breakthrough when they traced the woman's boyfriend at Empangeni.

"He admitted that the woman had visited him on the day she allegedly went missing.

"He further stated that he gave her money to go back home the same day she said she had escaped from her attackers.

"Police then established that she had lied when she said she was kidnapped and raped," said Naicker.

Buthelezi remains in police custody. Sentence will be passed on November 18.
