LAST Saturday saw Limpopo bury daughter of the soil in Petronella Ndou. She was business manager of the shop stewards' magazine and a graphic designer in the office of Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.
For Vhembe district it was a sad loss of a young, dedicated comrade who died on the eve of her 35th birthday.
But it was Vavi's humanity that stole the show. Vavi arrived for the funeral service on time, delivered a moving speech and humbled himself as he remembered Ndou.
He stood with us in the rain, helped us carry the weak and at no stage did I hear him complain of rain. And he did not try to politicise the service as most politicians would have done.
After the burialVavi came with us back to the house to comfort the family.
If only all politicians could respect and relate to the poor like Vavi, perhaps they would understand their people better.
