THE revamped Wonderboom Airport has announced its first operator after a R160 million upgrade.
The airport, owned and operated by the Tshwane Metro council, will handle aircraft with a seating capacity of between 80 and 100 passengers.
Last week Interlink Airline made history by being the first operator to fly from the revamped airport, which used to be an army base. Interlink will have daily flights to and from Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban.
According to Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele the upgrading of the airport will create more than 60000 jobs in the long run as well as secondary industries.
The revamping of the airport's departure and arrival halls as well as the tarmac will help accommodate the influx of visitors expected during the Fifa World Cup.
The airport will be operating scheduled flights between host cities to cater for the travelling fans.
Wonderboom is also expected to accommodate media flights, facilitate Fifa movement from Tshwane and Rustenburg, and serve as a refuelling centre for aircraft.
