G4S Care and Justice Service spokesperson Liana Goosen said the incident started at 2pm.
"The fire was extinguished by the fire response team and city fire brigade," she said.
Goosen said the inmates had barricaded themselves inside with the employees. "The employees are unharmed and the incident response team are attempting to resolve the situation."
She said the inmates were dissatisfied they could not be transferred to a medium security section due to their involvement in previous unrest situations at the prison. - Sapa
