SUPERSPORT United consolidated their top position on the Absa Premiership log with a 2-1 win over BidVest Wits at Milpark Stadium yesterday.

SUPERSPORT United consolidated their top position on the Absa Premiership log with a 2-1 win over BidVest Wits at Milpark Stadium yesterday.

The game was initially scheduled for Saturday night but was moved to yesterday by the PSL, in consultation with the two clubs, due to a floodlight failure. A moment of silence was observed just before kickoff in memory of Godfrey Mosotho, a Premier Soccer League match commissioner from Bloemfontein who died on Saturday.

The reigning league champions dominated the first half and Wits the second. Matsatsantsa a Pitori were the first to draw blood in the 32nd minute through striker Brian Umony's header during a goalmouth melee.

The Clever Boys came back strongly in the second half. Their efforts were rewarded in the 46th minute through Mark Haskins, whose club has suffered only two defeats this season.

In the 54th minute, Wits' Sibusiso Vilakazi scored a cracker but assistant referee Zakhele Siwela, had his flag up for offside. The home side were reduced to 10 men when Tefo Mashamaite was sent off by referee Daniel Bennet for violent conduct.

United's all-important goal came in the 79th minute through Glen Salmon. Goalkeeper Emile Baron denied Wits even a single point with dramatic saves.
